How much should be spent in 2008

The Loomis Town Council is looking at adding some new things to the budget. This current year we have about $130,000 surplus.
Some of the proposals for next year are
Funding of Fire District $350,000
Add a zoning enforecemt person $ 75,000
A New General Plan $ 150,000
Redure part of a road 80.000

Total New Programs $630,000 for 2008

This means the town would have to take $500,000 out of the 2.5 million reserved fund. The reserve fund would only last for another 4 years then the Town would have to cut stuff.

As far as a new General Plan my feeling is we do not need it at this time. People in Loomis do not want the Town to change so there is no need to rezone the Town

Thw $350,000 for the Fire District is because they are going broke and are looking to the Town to help them out. The only problem is that idf the Town helps them , then in about 4 years both the Fire District and the Town will go broke. The only way to slove the fire district is the people of Loomis vote for an additional tax assement for the fire district.

Let me know what you think

Thanks Miguel

Yes, the Town of Loomis should be funding the Fire District, yes even over rebuilding the Train Depot or having an new General Plan, or a new zonning enforcement officer. I keep hearing from everyone how important it is to keep the LFPD up and running, but then why are we spending money on things that don't relly matter that much compared to fire safety?
I don't understand why everyone wants to pass another bond for LFPD. A bond, if passed, that's tied to salaries and/or benefits will just have to be adjusted later on. Meaning we'll have to pass another bond later on down the road to pay for higher salaries and/or benefits because now all our fire people are leaving again because they can get paid better somewhere else. Bonds should never go towards something like that. A bond is just like taking out a loan to pay for your home, something that you can't possibly pay for in one payment, but you don't ever take out a loan to pay for a monthly expense like your PG & E bill, right? Why don't we have a County Fire Department like Sacramento County?

When will another assessment be enough? Everyone keeps saying that the only way to save the Loomis Fire Protection District is to pass another assessment. Why can't we get some of our elected officials to help us straighten out this mess with our low tax rate. I personally have contacted Ted Gaines office. They promptly contacted the Town of Loomis to only forward to me a detail e-mail of what we basically already know. Can't any of our elected officials help us? Why does everyone think it's just a lost cause to get some of the tax rate money that we already are paying taxes into? We already have an assessment that goes to LFPD on our tax bill in the amount of approximately $80.00. This same question also applies to the other government agency who are wanting to increase our taxes in the February election. Placer Mosquito Abatement already has one, as does Loomis Union School District & Placer Union School District (D.O.) for buidling & improvements bonds. I'm very concerned for the people in Loomis who live on a fixed income. There are a lot of older folks who live here, who, if we keep passing all of these assessments & bonds, won't be able to stay in their homes. I'm afraid that the consumer credit mentality of buy now, pay later, has trickled into our government's way of thinking, with no thought to how these debts will be paid off. We will eventually pass all of these debts on to our children & grandchildren, if they can even afford to live here. What a shame!
